Epigastric pain is a kind of disorder manifesting paroxysmal pain in the epigastric region as the main symptom. It is usually caused by diseases of upper digestive tract , such as chronic gastritis ,inactive stage of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, gastrospasm ,gastrointestinal neurosis and another functional disorders of the upper digestive tract .

Clinical manifestations in Traditional Chinese Medicine
(1) attack on the stomach by cold sudden onset of pain after catching cold or taking cold food, cold feeling in the epigastric region, which could be alleviated by warmth, no thirst, or preference for warm drinking, white tongue coating, and tense pulse.
(2) Retention of food Full sensation, later pain in the epigastric region after immoderate eating and drinking ,accompanied by belching, sour regurgitation or vomiting which may relieve pain, hesitant bowel movement or undigested food in the stool, thick greasy tongue coating , and slippery pulse.
(3) Attack on the stomach by liver qi Full sensation in the epigastric region may turn into distending pain and affect the hypochondriac regions, accompanied by belching, depression, or restless and irritability, thin white tongue coating, wiry pulse. The pain is usually aggravated by emotional change or stress , and alleviated by happy mood.
(4) Weakness and cold of the spleen and stomach dull cold pain, vomiting clear fluid, lassitude, cold hands and feet ,loose stool, pale tongue with thin white coating, weak soft pulse or deep thready pulse. The cold pain could be aggravated when the stomach is empty, and alleviated after eating or by warmth
